One of the most important things we can do as parents is learn to look beyond a child’s behaviour.

Because sometimes, what looks like defiance may be frustration.

What looks like withdrawal may be an emotion a child doesn’t know how to express.

And what looks like “bad behaviour” may be a child communicating a need they don’t yet have the words to explain.

This is why conversations about children’s mental health, behaviour and emotional wellbeing matter.

Recently, MomCircleNG hosted a parenting session with Roseline Jethro A., Licensed Child Therapist, hosted by Princess Ukwuoma, Founder of MomCircleNG.

The conversation explored the different ways parenting, child development, emotional needs and everyday family life can intersect.

And now, the session is available for MomCircleNG members to rewatch.

Understanding Children’s Mental Health

Children’s mental health is an important part of their overall wellbeing.

Just as we pay attention to a child’s physical health, growth and development, we also need to pay attention to their emotional and behavioural wellbeing.

The session created space to discuss children’s mental health and some of the things parents may notice as they navigate different stages of their children’s development.

Meeting Children’s Emotional Needs

Children have emotional needs just as they have physical needs.

They need connection.

They need to feel heard.

They need guidance.

They need boundaries.

They need reassurance and age-appropriate support as they learn to understand and express their emotions.

Understanding those needs can help parents approach difficult moments with greater awareness.

Parenting Through Different Developmental Stages

Parenting doesn’t remain the same as children grow.

What works for a toddler may not work for an older child.

Children’s needs, communication abilities, independence and behaviour change as they develop.

The session explored parenting developmental stages and the importance of understanding where a child is in their development.

Effective Parenting Strategies

There is no single parenting strategy that works perfectly for every child or every family.

Parents often need to observe, learn, adjust and try different approaches.

The session explored practical parenting strategies and guidance that can help parents think more intentionally about how they respond to their children.

Understanding Child Behaviour

Behaviour is one of the areas parents often find challenging.

Why is my child behaving this way?

Is this normal for their age?

When should I be concerned?

How should I respond?

The session included discussion around child behavioural symptoms and parenting insights that can help mothers think more carefully about what may be happening beneath a child’s behaviour.

Balanced Parenting and Screen Time

Screen time is another reality modern parents are navigating.

Technology is part of children’s lives, but parents also have to think about balance, boundaries and how screens fit into the wider family environment.

The session included a discussion around balanced parenting and screen time, giving mothers an opportunity to reflect on how they approach technology in their homes.

Parenting Is a Learning Journey

One of the things we love about expert sessions at MomCircleNG is that they don’t have to give you a perfect formula for motherhood.

Sometimes, the most valuable thing a conversation can give you is a new question.

A new perspective.

A moment of reflection.

A better understanding of your child.

Or even a reminder that you’re still learning — and that’s okay.

Parenting is a journey.

And as our children grow, we grow too.

Continue Learning With MomCircleNG

At MomCircleNG, we’re building a growing library of conversations, expert sessions, guides, resources and learning experiences designed around the real lives of mothers.

Because sometimes what Mama needs isn’t another random piece of advice on the internet.

Sometimes she needs a thoughtful conversation.

A trusted perspective.

A place to ask questions.

Or simply a reminder that she isn’t figuring everything out alone.
